"We were picked up at our over the water bungalow by car. The boat tour took us across beautiful waters to swim with sharks and stingrays. Then the next stop was to see the coral reefs. We then were dropped off by boat to our bungalow. Highly recommend this tour. Our guide was awesome."

Mask On, Into the Lagoon
Masks and snorkels are on board. Bring swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen and a towel unless your listing says one is provided.
Before You Book
The Shark Stop Is Knee-Deep, Not Open Water
Most people picture swimming with sharks as a deep-water plunge. On the Eco Snorkel Cruise the longest stop is about 100 minutes standing in knee-high water on white sand, with stingrays and blacktip reef sharks around your legs. Here is how the 2.5 hours run.
- Pickup at your hotel — Moana Adventure Tours collects every guest, from resorts, pensions or rentals; if your place is not on the pickup list, add its name when you book. Bring sunscreen, a hat, swimwear and a towel.
- Sharks and stingrays in the shallows, about 100 minutes — With the water at knee height, you walk among stingrays and blacktip reef sharks, then swim with the tropical fish nearby. The guide briefs you on how to behave around them, and the listing states that the animals are not fed.
- Looking for rays along the way — Depending on the weather and time of year, the guide looks for other rays in the lagoon, including mantas and eagle rays. Turtles, dolphins and whales are possible sightings, never promised ones.
- The Coral Garden, 30 minutes — Mask and snorkel on, you float over calm water busy with colorful reef fish. The operator provides gear but recommends bringing your own mask and snorkel. Do not stand on or touch the coral.
- Back to your hotel — The boat or car returns you to your accommodation with most of the day still ahead. Gratuities are not included, and free cancellation runs until 24 hours before departure.

How to Pick a Bora Bora Snorkeling Tour
Nine reasons people book, the page that answers each one, and the four tours worth a close look.
Most Bora Bora snorkeling tours visit the same three kinds of places: sandy shallows where blacktip reef sharks and stingrays gather, a coral garden full of reef fish, and, on some trips, a manta ray cleaning station. What changes from one tour to the next is how long you stay at each, how many people share the boat, whether lunch is included and what you pay. Start with the thing you most want to see, then match it to a length and a boat.
Start with what you want from the lagoon
- Best overall: our ranked list of the best Bora Bora snorkeling tours gives seven picks with prices, ratings and trade-offs.
- Sharks and stingrays: the shark and stingray tours page covers the shallow stops, the species and each operator’s feeding policy.
- Manta rays: manta ray snorkeling explains which tours name a manta stop, and why no tour can promise one.
- Coral Garden: Coral Garden snorkeling lists the tours whose itinerary includes it and how long they stay.
- Half-day: half-day snorkeling tours compares the 2.5-hour Eco cruise with the 3 to 4 hour multi-stop trips.
- Full-day: full-day snorkeling tours adds a motu lunch and more time between stops.
- Private: private snorkeling tours are priced per boat, so the cost per person falls as your group grows.
- Small-group: the best-tours list flags the boats with low booking caps, from 7 to 12 travelers per booking.
- Beginner-friendly: the half-day page points to the trips that start in shallow water and suit all fitness levels.
Couples and honeymooners have their own pages too: snorkeling tours for couples and honeymoon snorkeling tours.
The Eco Snorkel Cruise: short, shallow and close to the sharks
The Eco Snorkel Cruise from Moana Adventure Tours costs from $113 per person on Viator, and the same trip is also on GetYourGuide from $108. It is rated 4.8 from 598 reviews and lasts 2.5 hours, which makes it the shortest tour on this site.
The first stop takes up about 100 minutes of that time. You stand in water at knee height on white sand while stingrays and blacktip reef sharks move around you, then swim with the reef fish nearby. The second stop is 30 minutes at the Coral Garden. The listing states that the sharks and rays are not fed, and hotel pickup is included for everyone. Children from age 4 can join.
The trade-off is equipment. A mask and snorkel are provided, but the operator recommends bringing your own, and fins are not listed. If you want two good stops and your afternoon back at the resort, this is the one to check availability for.
Reef Discovery: the most-reviewed half day
The Reef Discovery Half-Day Snorkel Tour costs from $135 per person, is rated 5.0 from 1,042 reviews and runs 3.5 hours. That is the most reviews of any half-day tour on this site. Fins, a beach towel, soft drinks and pickup are included, and bookings are capped at 8 travelers.
The listing names manta rays and eagle rays among the wildlife its guests encounter, and recent reviewers describe three stops: a manta area, a large coral garden and shallow water with blacktip reef sharks and stingrays. Mantas are wild animals, so treat them as a chance and not a booking feature. The operator asks for at least a moderate level of fitness, and the GetYourGuide version costs more at $143 with only 8 reviews, so Viator is the better place to book this one.
A full day with sharks, rays and a BBQ lunch
The Full-Day Snorkel Cruise with Sharks, Rays and BBQ Lunch from Vavau costs from $155 per person, rated 4.8 from 722 reviews, for 6 hours on the lagoon. You meet stingrays and blacktip reef sharks, snorkel the coral gardens and stop on a small island for a BBQ and salad bar lunch with a beachside Polynesian performance. Pickup is included, though some hotels need a ferry crossing and private-island resorts should contact the operator first. It is also on GetYourGuide from $158.
Two other full days deserve a look. The Full-Day Lagoon Tour with Snorkeling and Motu Lunch has 1,701 reviews, the most of any tour on this site, at $174 per person. The Full-Day Lagoon Safari on GetYourGuide costs $171 per person, is rated 4.9 from 774 reviews and adds a manta stop, which the listing says is not guaranteed.
A private boat for your group
The Private Half-Day Snorkeling Tour by Boat from H2O costs $650 per boat for up to 4 people. Split four ways that is $162.50 each, and for two it is $325 each. It is rated 5.0 from 126 reviews and lasts 3.5 hours. The crew aims for 4 to 5 spots chosen around what you want to see, including manta rays, eagle rays, a natural coral garden and an outer-reef stop for sharks, and the listing says no animals are fed. There is no restroom on board, and the review count is smaller than on the big group tours.
Before you book
The lagoon water sits at roughly 25 to 30 C (77 to 86 F) all year. The warm, wet season runs November to April and the cooler, drier season May to October. Humpback whales visit French Polynesia roughly July to November, most often August to October.
Reef manta rays use cleaning stations in the lagoon year-round, and sightings at known stations are likely but never guaranteed. Keep at least 3 m away and do not touch or chase them. The blacktip reef sharks at the shallow stops are usually under about 1.6 m (5.2 ft) and timid, and bites are rare. The large stingrays are pink whiprays with a venomous tail spine, so shuffle your feet on the sand and never corner one.
Pack swimwear, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen, which is a good idea in any lagoon. Many tours provide a float or vest for weaker swimmers; ask when booking. Cruise passengers land at the Vaitape pier, where many tours start, and should leave a margin, because Reef Discovery issues no refund for a tour missed through late cruise ship arrival.

"Not a lot of frills, but you won’t miss them because the snorkeling is so good. I’ve been on snorkel cruises on catamarans with 30 or more guests, where you all end up in a tight crowd of life jackets and flippers, fighting to glimpse a few parrotf"

"We had a great time snorkeling. We were able to see sharks, sting rays, fish, and even an eel. The tour guy was charismatic and made the tour very comfortable. The boat picked us up from the Westin dock. The boat was a plain boat with no markings but the tour guy had a tshirt on that said Moana Adventures. Bora Bora Snorkeling Tours FAQ
Straight answers on prices, sharks, mantas, the Coral Garden and choosing a tour, using listing figures checked on 1 October 2026.
Yes. The lagoon is mostly shallow, the water sits at roughly 25 to 30 C (77 to 86 F) all year, and most snorkel stops sit inside the lagoon, away from the strong currents of Teavanui Pass. A typical trip combines sandy shallows with blacktip reef sharks and stingrays, a coral garden busy with reef fish, and on some tours a manta ray cleaning station. Most spots are reached by boat, which is why most visitors book a tour.
It depends on what you want to see. For a short trip focused on sharks and stingrays, the Eco Snorkel Cruise runs 2.5 hours from $113 per person. For the widest mix, Reef Discovery runs 3.5 hours from $135 per person and is rated 5.0 from 1,042 reviews. For a full day with lunch, look at the Vavau or Lagoon Service full days. Our best tours list ranks seven picks.
Shared group tours on this site start at $113 per person for the 2.5-hour Eco Snorkel Cruise (also on GetYourGuide from $108). Multi-stop half days cost $130 to $135 per person, most full days with lunch $145 to $174 per person, and the adults-only canoe day and luxury catamaran $282 and $312 per person. Private boats are priced per boat: $523 for up to 5 on the solar boat and $609 to $780 for up to 4 on the others.
Yes. Most group tours include a stop in shallow sandy water where blacktip reef sharks swim around snorkelers, often alongside stingrays. On the Eco Snorkel Cruise that stop lasts about 100 minutes in knee-deep water. Blacktip reef sharks are usually under about 1.6 m (5.2 ft) and timid, and bites are rare and usually minor. Follow your guide, keep your hands to yourself and do not chase them. See the shark and stingray tours.
The sharks most snorkelers meet in the lagoon are blacktip reef sharks, which are described as timid and easily frightened off by swimmers. Bites are rare and usually minor, but they are still wild animals. Stay close to your guide and never try to touch one. Sicklefin lemon sharks also live around Bora Bora, but they are mostly seen by divers in deeper water, not on snorkel tours.
Yes. The big rays at the shallow stingray stops are pink whiprays, often well over a metre across, and they carry a venomous spine on the tail. Guides tell guests not to touch, chase or corner them, and to shuffle their feet on the sand so the rays know they are there. Injuries usually happen when a ray feels threatened. Feeding policies differ between operators, so check the listing; several tours on this site state that they do not feed.
Often, but never with a guarantee. Reef manta rays visit cleaning stations inside the lagoon all year, and researchers have identified 87 individuals there between 2015 and 2024. Some tours, including Reef Discovery, the H2O shared boat and the Rohivai full day, list mantas or a manta stop, and the Rohivai listing says plainly that mantas are not guaranteed. Keep at least 3 m away. Read more on manta ray snorkeling.
The Coral Garden is a shallow, usually calm snorkel spot inside the lagoon, busy with reef fish such as butterflyfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish and wrasse. Operators use the name for more than one site, so sources disagree on its exact location. The Eco Snorkel Cruise spends 30 minutes there and the Manu full day spends 60 minutes. Do not stand on or touch the coral. Our Coral Garden guide lists the tours that stop there.
A half day covers the essentials. The Eco Snorkel Cruise takes 2.5 hours, and Reef Discovery, H2O and Lagoon Service run 3.5 to 4 hours with several stops, so you keep half the day for the resort. A full day of 6 to 7 hours adds a motu lunch and slower pacing between stops, mostly $145 to $174 per person. Pick a full day if lunch on a small islet appeals; see the half-day tours otherwise.
It can be, especially for three or four people. The H2O private boat costs $650 per boat for up to 4, which is $162.50 each for four and $325 each for two, for 3.5 hours and 4 to 5 stops of your choosing. A shared half day costs $130 to $135 per person. Private tours carry fewer reviews than the big group trips, with 126 for H2O. Compare options on the private tours page.
Many are. The Eco Snorkel Cruise starts in knee-deep water, accepts children from age 4 and is listed as suitable for all fitness levels. Reef Discovery says no prior experience is required but asks for moderate fitness. The H2O shared boat asks that you get in and out of the water by ladder unaided. Many lagoon tours provide a float or vest for weaker swimmers, but not all, so ask when booking.
Snorkel tours run all year and the lagoon water stays at roughly 25 to 30 C (77 to 86 F). The cooler, drier season is May to October and the warmer, wetter season is November to April. Humpback whales visit French Polynesia roughly July to November, most often August to October, and some tour listings mention whales as a possible sighting along the way. Manta rays use the lagoon year-round; no peak manta season is established.
Swimwear, a towel unless the listing includes one, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; reef-safe sunscreen is a good idea. Bring your own mask if you have a good one, as Moana recommends for the Eco Snorkel Cruise, and check whether fins are included, since some tours list them as excluded. Water shoes help on sandbar and motu stops. Cash for gratuities is useful, because some operators list tips as excluded.
Yes. Cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the pier in Vaitape, where many tours start, and some listings offer pickup at the Vaitape pier. Choose a half day that fits your port hours, such as the 2.5-hour Eco Snorkel Cruise, and leave a margin. Reef Discovery states that refunds are not issued if a tour is missed because of late or non-arrival of a cruise ship, and free cancellation on these tours ends 24 hours before departure.
