"Worth it. Might be the only thing worth it in Bora Bora because the main island sure doesn't come close to the expectations one comes here with, but the views on this trip were worth it. Tuhiti was a great guide, great English speaking skills and great attitude."

How a Coral Garden Snorkel Works
From the boat to the reef and back, the shape of a typical Coral Garden stop on a lagoon tour.
Check the itinerary names the stop
Book a tour whose listing names a Coral Garden stop. Manu gives it 60 minutes, the Eco Snorkel Cruise 30 minutes.
Gear up on the boat
Guides hand out masks and snorkels. The Manu day does not include fins or towels, so bring your own if you want them.
Float, do not stand
The Coral Garden is shallow and usually calm. Keep your feet off the coral and stay close to your guide, as boats run throughout the lagoon.
Continue the day
On the Manu day the reef is one of several stops, followed by mantas, sharks and rays, and a long lunch on Motu Fanfan.

Which Bora Bora Tours Stop at the Coral Garden
What the Coral Garden is, how long each tour spends there, and who can manage it.
Which tour to book for the Coral Garden
If the Coral Garden is the reason you are booking, the Full-Day Snorkel Tour with Lunch on Motu Fanfan run by Manu gives it the longest stop we found in any listing: 60 minutes. It costs $145 per person, runs 7 hours and is rated 4.9 from 177 reviews on Viator. The same day adds a 60-minute manta stop, a 60-minute shark and ray safari and a long lunch on Motu Fanfan, so the reef is one part of a full lagoon day.
Two practical points before you book Manu. It is not a hotel pickup for everyone: the boat meets guests at the Manu Taxi Boat path beside the Tiare Market supermarket, collecting you at the water’s edge. Lunch covers grilled fish and chicken, raw fish in coconut milk, taro, rice, fruit and juice, while beer and other drinks are sold separately.
If you only have a morning, the Eco Snorkel Cruise with Sharks and Stingrays spends 30 minutes at the Coral Garden inside a 2.5-hour trip, from $113 per person (rated 4.8 from 598 reviews, also on GetYourGuide from $108). Most of that cruise, 100 minutes, goes to the shallow shark and ray stop.
For a small boat, the Half-Day Eco Snorkeling Small-Group Tour lists a coral garden among its stops, caps the group at 8 people and costs $133 per person for 3 hours (5.0 from 99 reviews). Its listing gives no minutes per stop.
What the Coral Garden is, and where
The Coral Garden is a shallow, usually calm snorkel spot inside the lagoon, busy with reef fish such as butterflyfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish and wrasse. That much is consistent. Its exact location is not: published sources disagree on where it sits, and operators use the name for different sites. Several guest reviews of Lagoon Service and Reef Discovery trips describe a coral garden near the airport, while other boats head elsewhere. We do not pin it to one spot on a map, and you should treat “Coral Garden” on a listing as the operator’s chosen reef site for the day.
Depth is the other question people ask. The Coral Garden is shallow enough that you float over the coral at the surface, but no reliable source gives a depth figure, so we will not invent one. For context, the lagoon as a whole is mostly shallow, with a maximum depth of about 50 m, and the water sits at roughly 25 to 30 C (77 to 86 F) all year.
How long each tour spends there
Only three listings on this site put minutes against a coral stop:
- Manu full day: 60 minutes at the Coral Garden, $145 per person.
- Eco Snorkel Cruise (Moana): 30 minutes, $113 per person.
- Private Solar Boat Snorkel Experience (Parataito): 30 minutes, $523 per boat for up to 5.
Other tours name a coral garden in their description without a time. These include the Full-Day Snorkel Cruise with Sharks, Rays and BBQ Lunch (6 hours, $155 per person), the Lagoon Service full day, the H2O private boat and the half-day eco tour above. The Half-Day Small-Group Snorkel Cruise from Lagoon Service ($135 per person, 4 hours, 5.0 from 202 reviews) promises colorful corals but does not list its stops; many guest reviews describe a coral garden visit, which is encouraging, not a guarantee.
The Luxury Catamaran Sail with Snorkeling and Floating Bar is a different case. Sailing Bora Bora snorkels at its own private coral garden away from the crowded spots, not at “the” Coral Garden other boats use. It costs $312 per person for 4 hours (4.9 from 164 reviews; also on GetYourGuide from $303), and one guest review mentions about 40 minutes in the water.
Can beginners handle it
For most people, yes. The water is shallow and usually calm, and the Manu, Eco Snorkel Cruise and Lagoon Service half-day listings say they suit all fitness levels or ask for only moderate fitness. Guests on two tours describe guides helping weaker swimmers with a life ring or float, and many lagoon tours provide a float or vest, so ask when booking. Two cautions from guest reviews: one guest on the small-group eco tour met a strong current over the coral that took some swimming, and Manu’s day does not include fins. Bring your own if you want them.
Is the coral still healthy
A 2026 study by Lecchini and colleagues found that live coral on Bora Bora’s shallow fringing reef declined significantly after the 2024 marine heatwave, while the deeper reef changed little and fish numbers stayed stable. In practice, expect plenty of fish and a mix of living and damaged coral at shallow sites. Do not stand on or touch the coral.
How to choose and what to bring
Choose by how much of your day you want to give the reef. A full hour plus mantas, sharks and lunch points to Manu; a quick look on a short trip points to the Eco Snorkel Cruise. If you also want sharks and rays, compare the options on our shark and stingray tours page, and if a whole day is too much, see the half-day snorkeling tours. For every option ranked together, start with the best Bora Bora snorkeling tours.
Bring swimwear, a hat, a towel (Manu does not supply one) and fins if you like them. Reef-safe sunscreen is a good idea. The warm wet season runs November to April and the cooler, drier season May to October; the water stays warm in both. When you are ready, check availability for the Manu day.

"We had a good time - saw dolphins, sharks, sting rays, eagle rays, etc. The reason I took off a star is because of the lunch experience. Two issues - 1) let people serve their own food. I felt like they didn't give good portions to us but then l"
"Chris did a great job spotting wildlife while avoiding most all of the crowds. The boat is brand new. He was pointing out fish and creatures for us on a drift snorkel and had a life ring for those without fins. He found the mantas and eagle rays very readily. Chris was great with the three young kids onboard, as well. The lunch on the motu was really good! I could have used a smaller portion, I needed help to finish "
"We did a full day tour and was picked up at our hotel. Maui made it very fun and even sung songs and played music for us. We swam with the sharks, saw a mantra ray and coral gardens. Lunch was fabulous and lots of swimming time. Definitely recommend this for a great day out."

Bora Bora Coral Garden Snorkeling FAQ
Straight answers on where the Coral Garden is, how long tours stay there and who can snorkel it.
Published sources disagree on its exact location, and operators use the name Coral Garden for different reef sites inside the lagoon. Several guest reviews of Lagoon Service and Reef Discovery trips mention a coral garden near the airport, but other boats go elsewhere. Treat the name on a listing as the operator's chosen reef for the day, and book a tour whose itinerary actually names a coral stop.
The Coral Garden is shallow enough that you float over the coral at the surface, but no reliable source gives a depth figure for it, so we do not quote one. The lagoon as a whole is mostly shallow, with a maximum depth of about 50 m, and the water stays at roughly 25 to 30 C (77 to 86 F) year round. You will not need to dive down to see the fish.
Expect reef fish such as butterflyfish, parrotfish, surgeonfish and wrasse. Guest reviews of the Manu full day also mention stingrays at the coral stop, and the Manu listing itself says stingrays are seen there sometimes. Wildlife is never guaranteed, and the shark and ray encounters on most tours happen at a separate, sandier stop, not at the coral.
Generally yes. It is shallow and usually calm, and several listings say they suit all fitness levels. A guest on the small-group eco tour describes the guide helping a non-swimmer with a life ring, and a Manu reviewer mentions a life ring for those without fins. Many lagoon tours provide a float or vest, so ask when booking. One reviewer on the eco tour did meet a strong current over the coral, so expect to swim a little.
No. Only some itineraries name a coral garden stop, and the stops on any lagoon tour can change with weather and conditions. On this site, the Manu full day, the Eco Snorkel Cruise and the Parataito private solar boat put minutes against a Coral Garden stop. Others mention coral gardens in their description without a time. If the reef matters most to you, book one that names it.
The Manu full day lists 60 minutes at the Coral Garden, the longest we found in any listing. The 2.5-hour Eco Snorkel Cruise lists 30 minutes, and the Parataito private solar boat also lists 30 minutes. The half-day eco small-group tour, the Lagoon Service cruises and the H2O boats do not publish times per stop, so the guide decides on the day.
The cheapest tour on this site that names a Coral Garden stop is the Eco Snorkel Cruise at $113 per person on Viator, or $108 per person on GetYourGuide. The Manu full day with lunch costs $145 per person. The small-group eco half day is $133 per person. A private Parataito solar boat costs $523 per boat for up to 5 people, as checked on 1 October 2026.
A 2026 study by Lecchini and colleagues found that live coral on Bora Bora's shallow fringing reef declined significantly after the 2024 marine heatwave. The deeper reef changed little, and fish numbers stayed stable. Expect plenty of reef fish and a mix of living and damaged coral at shallow sites. Do not stand on or touch the coral while you snorkel.
No. Sailing Bora Bora's luxury catamaran snorkels at its own private coral garden, which the listing describes as away from the crowded spots. It is a 4-hour sail with a floating bar at $312 per person, rated 4.9 from 164 reviews. One guest review mentions about 40 minutes in the water. Book it for the sail and the drinks, not for the named Coral Garden.
Often on the same trip, at a different stop. The Eco Snorkel Cruise spends 100 minutes in knee-deep water with blacktip reef sharks and stingrays before its 30-minute Coral Garden stop, and the Manu day has a 60-minute shark and ray safari. Sightings depend on the day. See our shark and stingray tours page for the details.
Check what each tour includes. The Manu full day supplies a mask and snorkel but lists fins and towels as excluded. The Eco Snorkel Cruise supplies a mask and snorkel and recommends bringing your own. Reef Discovery includes fins. If you have a mask that fits you well, it is worth packing for any tour, along with water shoes for sandy or shell-covered stops.
Most tours accept children. The Manu full day takes infants from age 1 (on a lap) and children from 5 to 11 at a child rate, with adults up to 70. The Eco Snorkel Cruise has a child rate for ages 4 to 11. The Sailing Bora Bora catamaran has a minimum age of 8. A float or vest helps young swimmers, so ask the operator what they provide when you book.
Tours run all year and the water stays warm, roughly 25 to 30 C. The warm wet season is November to April and the cooler, drier season May to October. We have no reliable visibility figures by month, so we do not rank months. Stops can change with weather on any tour, so book early in your stay to leave room for a rescheduled date. See our half-day tours for short options.
